Celena Bustos has volunteered at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico for several winters. “I thought I’d try something similar in summer to see if I liked it,” she says. She says she picked the Bridger-Teton National Forest because everyone always talks about how beautiful it is. “I like being outdoors and being out in nature and plan to do a lot of hiking, bird watching, and rock hounding,” she says.
Growing up near the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Kansas, Celena says she has always supported public lands. Since selling her house in Houston and moving into an RV three years ago, she has explored national forests, parks, and wildlife refuges in Oregon and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. “I’ve always been nomadic. I like moving around a lot,” she says. “When I retired (from teaching elementary and middle school) and bought the RV, I wanted to go and see and do as much as I could. I’m excited to see what the Bridger-Teton National Forest is all about and to help share it with others.”
Fun Fact: Celena lived in Costa Rica for one year. “It was awesome,” she says. “I was able to do a lot of cool stuff.” She even climbed up the side of one waterfall to reach a second waterfall, which she also climbed to the top of. From the top of the second waterfall, she jumped 25 feet down into the pool at its base. “It was crazy,” she says. Celena is also a certified scuba diver. Favorite places to dive include the Virgin Islands, Cozumel, and Florida.
