How to Build a Campfire

Campfires bring warmth and light, but are not to be taken lightly. If not built properly, they can degrade the landscape; if not properly extinguished, they can cause a wildfire.

The first step of having a campfire on the BTNF happens before you’re at your campsite—check whether fires are allowed, have restrictions, or are forbidden at  www.fs.usda.gov/btnf. The drier the forest is, which means conditions are ripe for wildfires, the more restrictions there will be on campfires.

If campfires are allowed, learn how to minimize the impact of yours here.
